Finding a great story is only part of an editor\u2019s job. The other is discovering the people capable of telling it. <\/p>\n\n

Since 2019, Alexandra Pierres<\/strong> has been part of the editorial team at Planeta C\u00f3mic<\/strong>, where she works as an editor of original Spanish-language comics, supporting creators and selecting new projects that will become part of the catalogue of one of Spain\u2019s leading comic book publishers.<\/p>\n\n

With more than four decades of experience, Planeta C\u00f3mic publishes Spanish editions of some of the world\u2019s most renowned comic book and manga franchises, while also championing Spanish creators and nurturing new voices in comics and manga.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Ahead of her participation in the Portfolio Review at San Diego Comic-Con M\u00e1laga 2026<\/strong>, we spoke with Alexandra about what she looks for in a portfolio, why these reviews are such a valuable part of the industry, and what advice she would give to aspiring creators dreaming of publishing their first comic.<\/p>\n\n

Why did you decide to take part in San Diego Comic-Con M\u00e1laga 2026?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The San Diego Comic-Con\u00ae brand is a guarantee of quality. The tremendous success and media impact of last year\u2019s inaugural edition speak for themselves. As one of Spain\u2019s leading comic book publishers, Planeta C\u00f3mic considers it almost essential to be part of an event of this scale. <\/p>\n\n

What kind of talent are you hoping to discover through the SDCC M\u00e1laga 2026 Portfolio Review?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Planeta C\u00f3mic is a very eclectic imprint with a broad catalogue, so we\u2019re open to discovering creators with all kinds of artistic styles.<\/p>\n\n

When it comes to manga, we\u2019re interested in works from any genre. As for graphic novels, we\u2019re currently focusing more on contemporary slice-of-life and historical projects. <\/p>\n\n

What do you think makes Portfolio Reviews so valuable? What can they achieve that other opportunities cannot? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

I believe they\u2019re an extraordinary opportunity for both artists and publishers. Personally, I think they\u2019re one of the best tools available because they allow us not only to review a portfolio but also to meet the creators behind the work. <\/p>\n\n

These conversations provide valuable insight into what a future working relationship might be like, which is especially important in comics, where projects often take years to complete and require close collaboration between everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n

\n\n

What advice would you give to a young artist just starting out?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Patience, hard work, and perseverance.<\/p>\n\n

Starting a professional career often comes with a great deal of emotional pressure: doubts, fears, and uncertainty. That\u2019s why taking care of your mental health is essential, especially in a profession where you invest so much of yourself in every project. <\/p>\n\n

I\u2019d also encourage them not to be afraid of seeking out interviews and opportunities that could open doors. And finally, remember that a \u201cno\u201d today doesn\u2019t necessarily mean an impossible \u201cyes\u201d tomorrow. <\/p>\n\n

At Planeta C\u00f3mic, we have many examples of creators who were turned down at first but eventually found their opportunity.<\/p>\n\n

The important thing is to keep learning and improving so that, when that long-awaited \u201cyes\u201d finally arrives, you\u2019re ready to make the most of it.<\/p>\n\n
