Arthur Suydam turned Marvel’s superheroes into zombies long before anyone imagined they would take over the Marvel Universe. Known as the “Zombie King,” the American artist rose to international prominence thanks to his iconic covers for Marvel Zombies, whose success made his distinctive vision one of the defining images of the franchise.

His work is especially associated with Marvel Comics, where he has also illustrated covers featuring characters and series such as Deadpool, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight. Among his best-known projects is his acclaimed run as the cover artist for Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth.

Suydam’s career, however, began long before the zombie phenomenon. Works such as Cholly and Flytrap and Mudwogs showcased his pioneering approach to bringing fine art painting techniques into comic books, making him one of the first artists to successfully blend traditional painting with the comic book medium. Cholly and Flytrap has since been collected in a dedicated edition celebrating its place in comics history.

His artwork has also appeared in titles and universes including Aliens, DCeased, The Walking Dead, Batman, Army of Darkness, Vampirella, Sheena, Red Sonja, and Tarzan, among many others.

Throughout his career, Suydam has received numerous honors, including the Spike TV Scream Award for Best Artist, the Spectrum Gold Award for Institutional Art, the San Sebastian Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lifetime Achievement Award.
