Not everyone can say they’ve drawn Spider-Man, the X-Men, Captain America, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel. Carmen Carnero can. What’s even more remarkable is that it still feels like she’s only getting started.

Now recognized as one of the leading artists in American comics, the Spanish illustrator has spent more than a decade building a career that has taken her to some of the biggest titles at both Marvel and DC.

After earning a Fine Arts degree and a PhD in Art Restoration, Carmen began her professional comics career in 2013 with a collaboration on X-Factor. Soon after, she worked for Valiant, Dark Horse, and DC Comics, contributing to series such as Supergirl, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, DC Bombshells, and Astro City.

Her return to Marvel in 2018 with X-Men Red marked a turning point in her career. Just one year later, she became the lead artist on the relaunch of Captain Marvel, alongside writer Kelly Thompson, on one of the publisher’s most acclaimed series of that period.

That work earned her a place in Marvel’s prestigious Stormbreakers program, an initiative created to identify and promote the industry’s most promising artists. It’s an exclusive group and Marvel’s way of saying, “Keep an eye on this creator.”

In recent years, fans have enjoyed her work on titles including Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, The Amazing Spider-Man, Exceptional X-Men, and, most recently, Iron Man.

Carnero often says she found her way into comics almost by accident, after working as a tattoo artist and dance teacher. Looking at her career today, it’s hard to imagine a universe where superheroes managed to stay away from her pencils for very long.
