Born in Rome, the Italian artist began his professional career after completing his artistic studies by working in animation and graphic advertising as a visualizer. That early experience would leave a lasting mark on his visual storytelling, shaping the way he approaches movement, composition, and sequential narrative on the page.

Since 2005, Messina has built an impressive career in comics, collaborating with some of the industry’s leading publishers and establishing himself as one of the most acclaimed European artists working in the American comics market.
At Marvel Comics, he has illustrated titles including Ultimate Spider-Man, Wolverine and the X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Ironheart 2020, and Star Wars, bringing his dynamic and expressive style to some of the publisher’s most iconic characters.
His work for DC Comics includes series such as Catwoman, Action Comics, Midnighter, Wonder Woman, and Red Hood and the Outlaws, while for IDW Publishing he has contributed to beloved franchises including Angel, Star Trek, ROM, and True Blood.

Alongside his work on major franchises, Messina has also developed creator-owned projects and collaborated on independent comics, with highlights including The Bounce, alongside writer Joe Casey, and 3 Keys, where he has continued to explore new genres and storytelling styles.
With a career spanning superheroes, science fiction, fantasy, and horror, David Messina has established himself as one of the most distinctive and recognizable artists in contemporary international comics.
