Space. Jazz. Bounty hunters. Sometimes, just a few images are enough to recognize a work that changed the history of anime. Shin’ichirō Watanabe, the visionary creator of Cowboy Bebop, is coming to San Diego Comic-Con Málaga 2026 as a Special Guest.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Japanese animation, Watanabe has built a singular career through his unmistakable ability to blend genres, visual styles, and cultural influences. His work has resonated with multiple generations of audiences while pushing the creative boundaries of modern anime.

His name will forever be associated with Cowboy Bebop, the acclaimed series that revolutionized animation in the late 1990s by combining science fiction, film noir, westerns, and an unforgettable jazz soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno. Over the years, the series has become one of the most influential and celebrated works in the history of the medium.
Following its success, Watanabe continued to break new ground with productions such as Samurai Champloo, which fused feudal Japan with hip-hop culture; Space Dandy, an explosive science fiction adventure filled with humor and visual experimentation; Terror in Resonance; and Carole & Tuesday, once again demonstrating his remarkable ability to reinvent himself while remaining true to his distinctive creative vision.
More recently, he has continued to expand his legacy through new projects, cementing his place as one of animation’s most distinctive and respected auteur voices.

To speak of Shin’ichirō Watanabe is to speak of music, rhythm, style, and creative freedom. Few creators have built a body of work that is at once so diverse and so unmistakably personal.
At San Diego Comic-Con Málaga 2026, you’ll have the opportunity to meet one of the creators who redefined Japanese animation for a global audience and whose influence continues to be felt across anime, film, television, and popular arts around the world.
